World Book Night 2013
World Book Night is a celebration of books and reading that sees 20,000 selected volunteers give specially chosen and printed books to spread a passion for reading in their communities.
An independent editorial committee of librarians, booksellers, writers and broadcasters drew up a list of twenty titles from which the volunteers were asked to choose their book to give away each volunteer receiving 20 copies of their favourite book.
Recent research has found that a third of households in the UK dont have books in them, and 16% of adults struggle with literacy.
The ethos of World Book Night is that books are for everyone and reading has the power to change lives. World Book Night volunteers come from all walks of life and the only thing that connects them is their shared belief in the power and importance of books and reading.
As well as the books given by the volunteers, World Book Night also give books directly to institutions and through partners and charities to reach those who could especially benefit including prisoners, homeless people, those in hospital, care hostels and sheltered and supported housing.
Shirlyn has been selected as one of the 20,000 volunteers and her chosen book title is The Secret Scripture by Sebastian Barry. She says she chose this book because it is an amazing story, and, although the protagonists life is blighted by mistreatment and terrible ignorance, it is also marked by love, compassion and most of all hope.
The Secret Scripture is a gift from Shirlyn to the clients at Woking Mind and she hopes that they will enjoy it as much as she did. If, however, anyone does not enjoy the book then please do not struggle through it but give it to someone who might like it but please give it a try.
